Legacy Guardian Act Recognizing past contributors

The “Legacy Guardian” designation within the U.S. Space Force (USSF) recognizes the contributions of former Air Force personnel who served in space-related roles before the USSF was officially established and it creates a formal association between the Space Force and this group of veterans.

The Space Force Legacy Guardian Recognition Act, H.R. 5071, which was incorporated into the FY2025 NDAA and signed into law, authorizes the Air Force to designate such individuals as honorary separated members of the USSF. The designation reflects the history of space operations within the Air Force and how it formed the foundation of the USSF, fostering a sense of continuity and shared heritage.

The designation is not about adding new benefits or rights to former Airmen but rather about recognizing their service in space-related roles before the USSF’s creation. The legislation allows the Air Force to determine eligibility criteria, individuals would not be automatically granted Legacy Guardian status; they would need to meet established criteria. The law also authorizes the Air Force to allow next of kin to apply for the designation for deceased loved ones.

The Space Force Association is working closely with the USSF to work on the implementation of this program. In addition, the SFA has proposed a design for a Legacy Guardian lapel pin/insignia that is currently under consideration.
