Legacy Guardian Act Recognizing past contributors
Legacy Guardian Recognition Program
The “Legacy Guardian” designation within the U.S. Space Force (USSF) recognizes the contributions of former Air Force personnel who served in space-related roles before the USSF was officially established. This program creates a formal association between the U.S. Space Force and this distinguished group of veterans.
The Space Force Legacy Guardian Recognition Act (H.R. 5071), which was incorporated into the FY2025 NDAA and signed into law, authorizes the Air Force to designate eligible individuals as honorary separated members of the USSF. This important designation reflects the rich history of space operations within the Air Force and the foundation it laid for today’s Space Force—fostering a powerful sense of continuity and shared heritage.
This designation does not confer new benefits or entitlements, but serves as an official recognition of space-related service prior to the creation of the USSF. The legislation authorizes the Air Force to establish eligibility criteria, and individuals would need to meet those criteria to receive the designation. The law also authorizes the Air Force to allow next of kin to apply on behalf of deceased loved ones.
